Right on the east of the beach Matalascañas , there is a spectacular stretch of virgin beach that runs along the park of Parque Nacional de Donaña . This part of the town however is accessible only by foot, coming from the eastern corner of the town. Further on the way from the coast of Mazagón to Matalascañas you can witness some amazing fossilized dunes. Because they are public, you can readily explore them on foot along the Parque Dunar or even around the Cuesta de Maneli . Actually, the beach and dunes located at the Cuesta de Maneli are a beautiful and serene part of the coast which is accessible by the route A494 on your way to Mazagón . The Cuesta de Maneli is even signposted from this route and you can also go by the way marked walk of the Sendero de la Cuesta de Maneli you cab get from here.
Moving on the west of Matalascañas you can arrive at the huge and newly protected area of sand dunes which are called Parque Dunar . This large area of sand dunes located in Doñana is constantly under change because of the influence of the great winds of the area along with the sea. Aside from the movable dunes there are also fixed or stable dunes in the area. This type of dunes covers around 14,000 hectares of area within the Park. They also offer a wide range of old dunes which form from huge parabolic dunes to quaint dunes that are shaped like a hairpin. Quite interestingly there are also those that are sand bars which aligned themselves with prevailing south-western winds along with small active fronts developed which create migrating tongues and corridors.

Not just constrained to dunes in the sands and beaches galore, the town also has some dense pine forests right in the middle of the dune area. However, they have been widespread over some centuries ago though still intact generally. In this forest you can find an extraordinary tree which is called the juniper . This tree is a remnant of the original forest which is situated over dry sand bars amidst the dunes. Today, they cover only smaller but denser patches of area which measures up to ca. 0.1 ha each. Amidst these, there are also the Cork oak forests along with the wild olive, strawberry tree and other primeval forest trees.

As for wetlands, there are many over at the Las Marismas . The marshes on what used to be a marine bay is now cultivated by the Guadalquivir river. Because of this, they are now mainly dominated by reeds. However, the most special feature in these wetlands is not what grows on its banks but what flies over it. For in this area there is a large group of colorful flamingos.
Apart from the attractions, the marshes are also high in mineral content especially those of lime, calcium and sodium. It also has a slow drainage because of its clay soils which are of the Solonchak type, a specialty of this area.
