Beaches


The town boasts of more or less 12km of fine, golden sands and beaches, with clear, clean waters of the Atlantic. The beach is considered by many as the most developed beach area around and has been granted the distinguished Blue flag award of the European Union. The pure and unpolluted beach is the foremost reason why Punta Umbría has received this Blue flag over and over again. It is without doubt, one of the best beaches in Spain especially because it is the one with the highest quality of services and facilities.

The area is wide and spacious and it gets a lot of visitors due to the increasing number of commercial establishments in the area. Around here, there are many happy bars as well as restaurants and refreshment stands where you can enjoy a cool refreshing drink. Services on offer here also include a lot of water sports like windsurfing and there are also plenty of different places for you to park your vehicle close to the shores.

One more thing that distinguishes Punta Umbría from the other beaches around is the Ría , as mentioned previously. This refers to the part of the estuary of the Tinto and Odiel rivers which flows down into the sea. Along with this is a dynamic ecosystem which is a healthy habitat to a vast diversity of numerous species of plants together with some colonies of birds like the colorful flamingos . This distinctive habitat is particularly suited to a vast variety of wildlife, especially for birds. In here, amidst glorious sand dunes, pine woods, lush vegetation, marshes and freshwater lagoons, are live scores of the flamingos playing along with rare birds of prey such as 25 pairs of lynx and mongooses.

Punta Umbría is also rich in pine groves and dunes which separate its one side from the sea. On the other side is the Odiel Salt Marshes Nature Reserve . The town s beach is principally a fishing village but it has been hugely transformed by a large increase in tourism. This industry has contributed well enough not only to the installation of a range of services along its beach but also to improving the practice water sports at its sailing harbor. Just at the opposite of Punta Umbría is the beach of Espigón which is an 8km long strip of fine sands that can be reached via Aljaraque. The towns itself has many beaches which it can boast of .


Los Enebrales Beach
Before you set foot on Punta Umbria beach, you will find the extensive Los Enebrales beach with a sand surface that offers little difference after half of the beach. The highway here is not so close to the beach proper and there is a zone of varied vegetation which separates them. The parking though is difficult and you might have the possibility of walking on its footpath which Natural Place of Los Enebrales of the Mata Negra beach just before coming to Punta Umbria . Like the majority of the beaches in the zone, it is a good long walk since its width gives room for the agglomerations which are formed in spite of being much frequented by a lot of people.


La Bota Beach

Most of the people here have a great time fishing while the professionals of the local fishing fraternity regularly meet for fishing contests. Other than this though, La Bota also has great expanses of sand that it can boast of and is an exceptional option to go for a pleasant walk any time of the day. If you have a car, this beach has an easy and extensive parking lot that extends along the entire beach but is also within close proximity to the highway.

Its sparkling waters and pristine shores make this beach a recipient of the blue flag that has been granted by the European Union. One more thing, its accessibility is amazing, with easy roads without barriers. There are a lot of different zones where you can park the car very close to the beach.

The equipment and services offered in this beach include a handicapped persons facilities, parking, showers, beach umbrellas and hammocks. You can also practice windsurfing and sailing here. The coastline offers windsurfers the chance to practice this sport at different levels. Nearby is the town of Tarifa which is a world-class windsurfing location and the host to the annual world windsurfing championship circuit. This has around ten kilometers of white sands and an unspoilt countryside with some of the best windsurfing conditions in the whole of Europe.


El Portil and Nuevo Portil
El Portil
has a vast selection of shops, supermarkets, cafés and beach bars. These said restaurants are popular with the locals from Huelva and its surrounding locals from the residential villages, especially during weekends. The El Portil is set in the district of El Portal and can be reached by taking the road towards Punta Umbría and leaving El Rompido behind. There are several ways that you can get to the beach throughout the built area.

El Portil also has a lagoon which is surrounded by dunes that was created when shifting dunes blocked streams. The lagoon is surrounded by an abundant vegetation and vast bird life that can be seen very closely attached to that of the nearby marshes of Odiel .

The beaches of El Portil and Nuevo Portil are beautifully set in the coast road. This place here has various good quality restaurants situated in prime positions which are overlooking the magnificent beach. There is also an excellent golf course nearby as well as spa facilities at the Cartaya Playa hotel that is within Nuevo Portil Campo De Golf.


Punta Umbria

Equipment and services: This beach has a parking area and showers. It also has a handicapped persons facilities, parking and showers, beach umbrellas and hammocks.

The Punta Umbria Beach is considered as the most urbanized beach within the zone. This beach is so wide that those who visit the Punta Umbria beach flocked with a throng of people also especially since it is also the beach that certainly possesses major services and infrastructures like huge restaurants, bars and a very comfortable chiringuito for refreshment any time of the day. It offers many services like nautical sports such as windsurfing. Along with majority of the beaches of the zone, it is very good a long walk in spite of being much frequented. As the sun sets in this area there are students here that organize beach football or volleyball. The town comes very much alive at night. Punta Umbria is also acknowledged as an excellent golfing area, along with other facilities and warm climate that makes it absolutely ideal for sport lovers. For children, there are zoos, theme parks, aqua parks, and nature centers. There are also go-karting, ballooning, mountain biking and jeep safaris. The blue flag has been awarded to this beach


Mata Negra

Size: Big (3500 m)

Equipment and services: this beach has showers.
You can practice here fishing.

This beach is the continuation of the La Bota beach, along with the practice of the fishing of cane. This beach has turned cane into a sport that is the reason for its being much frequented in this zone. The highway is close to the beach and a tier of bushes can even be confused with the sand in its proximity. There is also a footpath called the Natural Place of Mata Negra where you can cross well by walking or biking. The complex of Punta Umbria beach is also destined for a lot of nudist sections.
