This modest fishing town was the first point of the Moorish incursion of Southern Spain sometime in AD 711. Behind Tarifa are hundreds of wind turbines that generate power for this small town. It has one of the largest wind farms in all Europe.
Tarifa has ten kilometers of white sandy beaches, unspoiled countryside and some of the best windsurfing conditions in Europe. The wild coastline of Tarifa attracts surfers and nature lovers alike, having recognized Tarifa as a true surfing paradise. Just as famous for its bird watching as its surfing, and there are countless prospects to explore leisure activities on the rolling countryside -- horse-riding, rock-climbing, kite-surfing, hang-gliding, and diving and what not.
This town has seen great moments. In 1295, Guzman El Bueno safeguarded the town against the invading Moors. Local legend says that the Moors captured his son threatening to kill him if Guzman won t surrender the town. He refused to throw down his sword with which they killed his son.
