Palos de la Frontera is the small, quiet town on the River Tinto just 10km upstream from Huelva City and the sea. This is a very historical town whose city area has been called the "cradle of the discovery" itself. Palos is of great interest to tourists because this is where in 1492 Christopher Columbus set sail westwards and discovered the Americas. The historical and splendid town of Palos won world recognition through America's discovery which still echoes up to this date in the memory of its inhabitants who cant help but reminisce the events brought about by their history.
It was on August 3, 1492 when Christopher Columbus sailed from Palos , Spain in order to reach Watling Island, in the Bahamas on October 12, Cuba on October 18 and even Santo Domingo / Haiti on December 6. This was quite a memorable trip for the man, and in fact there are many myths spread about Columbus. He was then a sea captain from one of Portugal's influential families. When he set sail from the Spanish port of Palos on Friday 3 August, he was in full command of the glorious Santa María which was then a decked ship that was 36`m long, maintained with 50 men and attended by two little caravels called the Pinta and the Niña. The ship was captained by Martin Alonso Pinzón, and along with his brothers, the entire squadron was comprised of only 120 adventurers. Spirits flew high as they sailed away from the harbor of the town of Palos , unbeknownst of the future that lay waiting for them when they will make their own name and carve them in history. This boat sighted San Salvador in the Bahamas on Friday, 12 th of October, 1492, and Columbus explored the coasts and named a large number of islands, including Cuba and La Espanola; thus, the discover of the New World. They began to set sail on 4 January 1493 on the return journey to Spain. They reached the town of Palos by 15 March 1493, while Columbus was receiving the highest honors of the court.

The history made by the discoverer resonates in the entire town, in its streets and places which equals the reviving of such a glorious story and the other stories of discovery owned up by the town.
The town of Palos shines with houses that are quaint and even cultural, a very typical Andalusia small town. Situated around the edge of the Rio Tinto, it is surrounded with different successful and modern agricultural industries. These businesses are mainly profiting from the beautiful and sweet strawberry fields.
