Ayamonte |
 |
Ayamonte is located in the province of Huelva, right along the estuary of the Río Guadiana which is the second longest river in Europe. It is primarily a town that is teeming with the purest Andalusian charm. Happiness is a staple here as you will be greeted with friendly smiling faces, colorful festivals, good food, and the hospitable affection of its people. This town is in the frontier and is also an important fishing port, with a maritime character that is only further enhanced by its numerous dockyards and other naval trappings.
The development of Ayamonte is linked to its prime position on the border along with Portugal . It is very attractive to a number of visitors especially with its charming, tiled plazas that is only reminiscent of its neighbor Portugal . It is further lined with trees, restaurants and bars, while the fishing port and resort, with its glorious beaches and coast line, make it an ideal stopping place between Spain and Portugal .
However, many international tourists occasionally make the mistake of bypassing the Costa de la Luz and this quaint town on their way through to southern Spain and to the Algarve. This is such a sad journey for by then the visitor will surely miss the lovely, unspoilt area around Ayamonte . This town is not only worth visiting for all its leisure attractions and beach galore but also because it offers easy access to a lot of areas with natural beauty or with sightseeing interest.

This town claims to having more foreign tourists than the other resorts along the Costa de la Luz in Huelva province. This is partly due to the proximity of the town to the Algarve as well as its position as being in the privileged westernmost resort along the Andalucian coast.
It was only until the 1990s that Ayamonte occupied a prime position for crossing the Spanish - Portuguese borderline. It offered frequent trips of ferries across the river to Vila Real de San Antonio in Portugal and in 1991 an impressive suspension bridge was opened to pave way for access to two kilometers north of Ayamonte . This section took away the town's border traffic and is now a motorway which links the Algarve with Huelva city and Seville . Today, the journey from Ayamonte to Faro on the Algarve route is now a mere 45 minutes away. Ferries to date, still go to Vila Real in Portugal, along with the boat company Transportes del Guadiana which also runs regular boats from the Muelle de Portugal right in the center of Ayamonte . As for buses, there are frequent buses to the Algarve from Vila Real. During summer this very attractive frontier town as well as key fishing port has a ferry trip that connects Spain to Portugal and sees the coming and going of a lot of travelers. During a quiet dusk you can enjoy a climb to the Parador of this town to contemplate the river, the other travelers, the lands of Portugal and the town itself, as it shines under the melting, multi-colored setting sun. The great view is to die for especially with the neat, whitewashed houses and the terraced roofs.
